Buying a Kindle in Canada: Warning Store Scam
So like many of you back in 2010, i was minding my own business and watching tv, when i first heard on the news that amazon made the kindle. At first i thought it was just a phase or gimmick. But later i saw the potential. An avid Canadian book reader like you, i wouldn't have to keep my spouse awake at night because of the light on, and I could take more then one book with me when traveling or on my breaks at work.
I was surprised to see that the kinlde i bought was some type of gadget that could only read text files i would upload through an sd card, not even a usb! so 200$ later, weeks of going back and forth with the manager of the store which we agreed on not to mention (as of 2011) because of their no money back, last sale policies.
I told the manager about how i will write this blog about buying a kindle in canada, and how i will do wrong to his name. So he finally agreed not only to give me my money back but he also revealed to me something that I felt stupid about later on: why dont I buy directly from the maker, from the source... Kindle Canada Store? @#$% ! Well we didnt have it available back then, but now, us precious little happy ebook reading canadians, can enjoy not only the safety of shopping online.
So I really hope you that this warning to heart, Canada, and never get scammed at a non-official STORE or re-seller... Always buy from the source, always buy from the maker: Amazon. And yes, there are plenty of ways to get to it, and this blog is full of it.
(In all honesty, After writing this article, you guys have been super supportive, my family and I were able to stay positive and got encouraged in a very tangible way when the season came when one of us lost a job like many of you, and you know i would never guide you to any other site then the people who actually made the kindle in canada available, but if you dont trust me, find out for yourself, test me, But thank you again)
These are some of the short articles that I recommend before you buy a kindle in canada:
-Your fellow Canadian Kindle reader, and writer.
(update october 2012: I just had the chance to review the Canadian Ipad Mini by Apple )
Buying the kindle, my canadian mistakes
So I looked online everywhere, disappointed to see that we will have to wait a while before the kindle comes to canada. Right away i thought: My huge flee market or china town, they probably imported some! WRONG!I was surprised to see that the kinlde i bought was some type of gadget that could only read text files i would upload through an sd card, not even a usb! so 200$ later, weeks of going back and forth with the manager of the store which we agreed on not to mention (as of 2011) because of their no money back, last sale policies.

How can I buy the Kindle in Canada
Buying a kindle in canada to pursue my hobby of reading ebooks was a fun way to find out that it was doable, when i first started looking for the kindle.
Recently though that price has come down a lot! And I have a laptop filled with pdf files that would be a lot easier to read on a small device like the Kindle instead of me lugging around my laptop all day. Plus the batteries on a Kindle last days as opposed to the hour or so I can get out of my laptop and books for the kindle are about half the price as the same book from a book store.
Don't forget that this is why I buy a kindle in Canada and it doesn't matter
that I found a few actual stores that said they sold it I found they
were just ordering them from Amazon on my behalf and charging me for the
privilege. So the only real place to get one is from the US Amazon
site. But what is the actual cost?
If you live in the US you can get one for as low as $139 with free shipping but Canadians don't have the free shipping option. Also Canadians have to pay import taxes. Fortunetly the Amazon site calculates everything for you and includes the taxes.
So if your not sure about where to buy Kindle in Canada but are wondering about the very real cost... I've done the research for you.
The base model Shown here is $139
Add $12.98 for shipping and handling and another $18.63 for the import taxes and your looking at $170.61 for your total price. That's also in US dollars but when I checked we are currently so close to par that US and Canadian dollars are pretty much the same. The actual conversion is currently better, $170.61 USD = $167.13 Canadian however rates fluctuate daily so If your curious where to buy kindle? at the amazon website, heres a quick link: Online Amazon Kindle Store
The prices quoted were current as of June 22th 2011 when I wrote this.
For the upgraded model which also has 3G shown here the prices in USD are as follows.
$189 plus $12.98 for shipping and handling, then the governments share at $25.33 for the import taxes and your total comes out to $227.31USD which is $222.67 Canadian as of June 22th 2011.
Remember currency rates change daily so the price today may be more or less however they don't change dramatically so you can be sure it'll be close to the prices shown here. Remember a 5% change in rates, which is a huge change and unlikely in the near future only changes the price on $100 by $5.
Want the super duper deluxe model? Well here are your prices for that.
$379 plus $12.98 shipping and handling plus $50.79, ouch, for the Government and your total comes out to $442.77 USD.
In Canadian funds that's currently, as of June 20th 2011, $433.80.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Rates change daily so don't get mad if you do order one and the Canadian price is slightly different. The Canadian prices shown are based on today's exchange rate and unless you happened to find my blog within minutes of me posting this you will likely see a different exchange rate. This aint that important for us Canadians lol.
So they are a little more expensive if ordering online which is the only way to Buy a Kindle in Canada.
However there is another way around this if you live close to the border or travel to the states regularly. And that is cross border shopping. You can buy a kindle at Target, Best Buy and Staples in the US and with the current exchange in our favour that means you'll be paying a little less. However you'll still need to cough up the import taxes so your really only saving the twelve bucks for shipping and I'm guessing it'll cost a lot more then twelve bucks to drive down to the states for the day.
Not to mention the ridiculous hassle involved with US Customs now that they think everyone's up to no good.
So there you have it. The real price you should pay, and the place to buy a Kindle in Canada is a bit more because of the to taxes and shipping but it's still way less then when they first came out. So I've made up my mind. I'm buying one online and saving the gas money. You must.

The actual conversion is currently better, $170.61 USD = $167.13 Canadian however rates fluctuate daily so If your curious where to buy kindle? at the amazon website, heres a quick link: Amazon Kindle Store
The prices quoted were current as of June 20th 2011 when I posted this.
For the upgraded model which also has 3G shown here the prices in USD are as follows.
$189 plus $12.98 for shipping and handling, then the governments share at $25.33 for the import taxes and your total comes out to $227.31USD which is $222.67 Canadian as of June 20th 2011.
The Canadian prices shown are based on todays exchange rate and unless you happened to find my blog within minutes of me posting this you will likely see a different exchange rate. This aint that important for us Canadians lol.
So they are a little more expensive if ordering online which is the only way to Buy a Kindle in Canada. However there is another way around this if you live close to the border or travel to the states regularly. And that is cross border shopping. You can buy a kindle at Target, Best Buy and Staples in the US and with the current exchange in our favor that means you'll be paying a little less. However you'll still need to cough up the import taxes so your really only saving the twelve bucks for shipping and I'm guessing it'll cost a lot more then twelve bucks to drive down to the states for the day. Not to mention the ridiculous hassle involved with US Customs now that they think everyone's out to get them.
So there you have it. The real cost of Kindle in Canada is a bit more because of the to taxes and shipping but it's still way less then when they first came out. So I've made up my mind. I'm buying one online and saving the gas money. You should too.
